Can CBD Improve Your Immune System?
Every second of our life we are exposed to an endless list of diseases and infection-causing pathogens that would hurt our health and/or ultimately kill us if we do not have a strong immune system. It is therefore very important to boost your immune system and ensure it works the way it is supposed to. But how do you boost your immunity? Can CBD oil boost the immune system? Or will it suppress it?
There is no straightforward answer to that, it may even do both depending on the condition. CBD may assist with your immune system indirectly, through other factors such as sleep, appetite, and stress.
But what is the relationship between CBD and the immune system?
Despite research on the possible positive effects of cannabinoids on the human body, there are still more studies required before it can be conclusively used as a treatment option, especially how it affects the immune system.
For a long time, the use of marijuana has been thought to increase susceptibility to infections because of its modulation of the immune system.
Especially after evidence suggesting that the endocannabinoid system plays a role in the control of the immunity functions. But is there evidence of Cannabidiol improving immunity? If so, how?
The immune system is your body’s defense against disease. It comprises many biological processes and to function properly, it must be able to detect pathogens and distinguish them from the body’s healthy tissue. If it cannot distinguish them, it may attack the healthy tissue causing an immunity disorder called autoimmunity.
However, pathogens can evolve rapidly and adapt to avoid detection by the immune system, but your body is also sophisticated enough to adapt over time to identify those pathogens more efficiently. After an encounter with a pathogen, the body develops adaptive immunity, enhancing its response with the pathogen if it encounters it again.
Your body does not have to wait for an encounter to develop immunity. It is equipped with a nonspecific defense mechanism, the innate immunity that reacts immediately or within hours after the antigen appears in the body.
This mechanism includes physical barriers such as skin, chemicals found in the blood and cells that attack foreign bodies. The innate immune response is not specific to a particular antigen.
It depends on phagocytic cells and a group of proteins that can identify the specific features of a pathogen and quickly activate to destroy it.
CBD, the Endocannabinoid System
As is always the case with any cannabinoid, the ECS is key. The endocannabinoid system has the two receptors that cannabinoids attach themselves to; CB1 and CB2. It also comprises endocannabinoids such as anandamide, the proteins that transport them and the enzymes that help break them down. The endocannabinoid system is important when studying CBD and immunity.
The ECS is responsible for regulating a lot of psychological processes in our bodies, including inflammation and the immune function. Cannabinoid receptors, both CB1 and CB2 can be found on the immune cells.
The ECS produces endocannabinoids on-demand to continually maintain the biological balance in the body. This balance is necessary for the immune system to function properly.
This is important as it is what keeps you healthy and fights effectively against pathogens and other threats. If the immune system is not working as it should be, inflammation response can be over triggered leading to other health issues, such as persistent inflammation and chronic pain.
Does CBD Oil Support the Immune System?
According to recent studies, CBD may assist by suppressing a hyperactive immune system, therefore aiding it from possibly attacking its healthy body cells. Until further studies are complete, CBD and its effects on the immune system remain a mystery.
