Hemp Extract Vs Hemp Oil Vs CBD Oil: What's The Difference?

Hemp extract, hemp oil, and CBD oil are often confused because they all come from the hemp plant. However, these products are made from different parts of the plant and contain different compounds.

Understanding the difference between hemp extract, hemp oil, and CBD oil can help you choose the product that best fits your needs and avoid purchasing something different than you expected.

In this guide, we'll explain what hemp extract, CBD oil, and hemp oil are, how they're made, and the key differences between them.

Quick Answer: Hemp Extract Vs Hemp Oil Vs CBD Oil

Hemp extract, hemp oil, and CBD oil are not the same.

  • Hemp extract contains naturally occurring hemp compounds, including cannabinoids and terpenes.
  • CBD oil contains cannabidiol (CBD) as its primary cannabinoid.
  • Hemp oil, also called hemp seed oil, is made from hemp seeds and does not naturally contain significant amounts of cannabinoids.

Although all three products come from hemp, they serve different purposes and contain different ingredients.

Where Do Hemp Products Come From?

All hemp-derived products originate from the hemp plant, a variety of the Cannabis sativa species. Industrial hemp is cultivated to contain very low amounts of THC while remaining within federally legal limits.

Where Do Hemp Products Come From?

In addition to CBD, hemp contains many naturally occurring compounds, including cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, and fatty acids.

Different parts of the hemp plant are used to create different products. This is why hemp extract, CBD oil, and hemp seed oil can vary significantly even though they come from the same plant.

Contains Other Cannabinoids Often Varies No
Contains Terpenes Often Varies No

Understanding this comparison makes it easier to choose the right product and avoid confusion when shopping.

What Is Hemp Extract?

Hemp extract is produced from the flowers, leaves, and other aerial parts of the hemp plant.

During extraction, manufacturers separate naturally occurring plant compounds, including:

  • Cannabinoids
  • Terpenes
  • Flavonoids
  • Plant oils

Because hemp extract contains multiple hemp compounds, it may contain CBD along with other naturally occurring cannabinoids.

Many hemp extract products are available as:

  • Tinctures
  • Capsules
  • Gummies
  • Topicals

When comparing hemp extract vs CBD oil, remember that hemp extract may contain a variety of hemp compounds, while some CBD products focus primarily on cannabidiol.

Does Hemp Extract Contain CBD?

Yes, many hemp extract products contain CBD. However, hemp extract may also contain additional cannabinoids and plant compounds naturally found in hemp. The exact cannabinoid profile depends on the product and extraction method used.

Does Hemp Extract Contain CBD?

This is one reason consumers often ask, "Is hemp extract the same as CBD?" While hemp extract may contain CBD, the two terms are not identical.

What Is CBD Oil?

CBD oil is a product that contains cannabidiol (CBD), one of the most well-known cannabinoids found in hemp.

CBD oil is typically made by combining hemp-derived CBD extract with a carrier oil such as:

  • MCT oil
  • Hemp seed oil
  • Olive oil

CBD oil is available in many product types, including:

  • CBD tinctures
  • Gummies
  • Capsules
  • Softgels
  • Topicals

When comparing CBD oil vs hemp oil, CBD oil always contains cannabidiol, while hemp seed oil does not.

Full Spectrum Vs Broad Spectrum Vs CBD Isolate

CBD products are often categorized into three main types.

Feature Full Spectrum Broad Spectrum CBD Isolate
Contains CBD Yes Yes Yes
Contains Other Cannabinoids Yes Yes No
Contains Terpenes Yes Yes No
Contains THC Trace amounts Typically none None
CBD Only No No Yes

Understanding these labels can help you better evaluate CBD products and compare cannabinoid content.

What Is Hemp Oil?

Hemp oil, commonly called hemp seed oil, is made by cold-pressing hemp seeds. Unlike hemp extract and CBD oil, hemp seed oil is valued for its nutritional profile rather than its cannabinoid content.

What Is Hemp Oil?

Hemp seed oil naturally contains:

  • Omega-3 fatty acids
  • Omega-6 fatty acids
  • Vitamin E
  • Essential fatty acids

It is commonly used in:

  • Cooking
  • Salad dressings
  • Nutritional supplements
  • Personal care products
  • Skincare products

Its mild, nutty flavor makes it a popular ingredient in many food products.

Does Hemp Oil Contain CBD?

Traditional hemp seed oil does not naturally contain significant amounts of CBD. This is because hemp seed oil is produced from hemp seeds, while CBD is primarily found in the flowers and aerial parts of the hemp plant. This distinction is one of the most important differences between hemp oil and CBD oil.

How To Read Hemp And CBD Labels

Reading product labels carefully can help you identify whether a product contains cannabinoids.

How To Read Hemp And CBD Labels

Look for:

  • CBD content listed in milligrams
  • Cannabinoid information
  • Third-party lab testing
  • Certificate of Analysis (COA)
  • Full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, or isolate labeling

Some products may advertise hemp oil while containing only hemp seed oil and no cannabinoids. Reviewing the label can help you understand exactly what you're purchasing.

The legality of hemp, CBD, and hemp extract all depends on which state you live in. If the hemp extract in your drink mix contains THC, then there may be more cause for concern. However, most CBD and Hemp extracts do not contain THC. CBD alone is legal in every state. It’s THC that the local laws are directed toward.

I suggest reading our blog “Is CBD Legal in my State”

There is a chance that your daughter-in-law assumes that anything hemp or CBD-related is marijuana and will get you high. However, that is not the case. CBD is not capable of causing any type of high. THC (which is the main cannabinoid in marijuana), on the other hand, will get you high when taken in large enough quantities.

Let me know if this helped answer your questions.

Zatural,

I had a ten-pack nutrition powder packs that I put in my water bottle. Later, I read the label on the powder flavor (mixed berry) and in small font I read the box and it contained “Hemp Extract”. I was a my daughter-in-law’s visiting and she accused me of taking CBD. She instructed me to throw it away. That it was illegal and did not want it in her house. I did so, but by reading this article I am curious about its illegality and usage. Can someone explain to me if it is safe and legal in powder form to put into water to flavor it? The package read nutritional. Was I correct in throwing it out? Is that illegal to have it? Thank you.
