Are you interested in trying CBD but not sure what to expect? This is the blog post for you! CBD offers a safe, natural, fast-acting, and convenient form of treatment for various health issues. This blog post will focus on some of those health issues and how CBD may provide relief.
We've all heard how CBD can play a role in assisting with pain, anxiety, sleep, mood, and overall health and wellness, but how is this possible?
It all has to do with how CBD interacts with the human endocannabinoid system (ECS). This body system plays a direct role in regulating and balancing the maintenance and function of other systems. The ECS is made up of special CB1 and CB2 receptors located all over the body.
CB1 receptors are primarily found in the brain and central nervous system and the lungs, vascular system, muscles, GI tract, and reproductive organs. CB2 receptors are primarily found in the organs of the immune system and peripheral organs like the spleen, bone marrow, pancreas, liver, and skin. Cannabinoids like CBD bind to these receptors to help regulate the systems they are associated with.
1. Soothes Pain and Inflammation
Probably one of the most well-known benefits associated with CBD is its ability to assist with pain and inflammation. According to a study published by the Journal of Pain Research, researchers found "a significant analgesic effect of cannabinoids" when compared to the placebo group.
Whether you are looking for something to help relieve muscle pain after a hard workout or something to help you heal from a difficult surgery, CBD may be able to provide the relief you're looking for. When it comes down to the effectiveness of CBD, make sure you find a strength that works for you.
2. Support Anxiety and Stress
Another of the most common benefits of CBD is its ability to assist with anxiety, stress, and mood balance. Scientists have found CBD to have antidepressant-like effects in several animal studies. The relationship between CBD and anxiety is clear when looking at the link between cannabinoids and CB1 receptors in the brain that may play a role in regulating hormones and other factors associated with mood. 3. Assist with Sleep and Relaxation
CBD is also known to help with sleep. Sleep disorders like insomnia, night terrors, sleep apnea, and restless leg syndrome are often associated with anxiety and can lead to unhealthy sleep cycles and other health problems.
One study found that by administering 25mg of CBD for three months, the subjects experience a significant decrease in their original anxiety scores. The conclusion was that CBD regulates cortisol, the stress hormone. If this hormone isn't regulated, it can result in low energy, stress, and unbalanced sleep and wake cycles. Taking CBD before bedtime may help balance cortisol levels, decrease anxiety, and help you settle down and unwind before a good night's rest.
If you want to get the most out of your CBD, it is recommended that you take it daily! Like any other vitamin or wellness supplement, you have to take it consistently to get the desired results. According to information available from the World Health Organization, "CBD has been found to have relatively low toxicity," making it safe for daily consumption.
Taking CBD every day may encourage better results due to its lipophilicity. Because cannabinoids are soluble in fat (lipophilic), they can accumulate in your body for additional long-lasting health benefits.
Finding the right CBD strength is key to the type of benefits you expect to receive. Everyone has a different strength that works best for them, and it depends on several factors like weight, age, health, and intensity of symptoms. It is generally recommended that you start small and work your way up to a dosage that gives you the best results.
The chart below was developed by Zatural's in-house Naturopathic Doctor to guide those new to CBD. This chart should be viewed solely as a recommendation as it is only based on weight and not 100% accurate. If you begin with the "Starting Dose" and do not feel any difference in your symptoms, then increase to the "Low Dose" for a few days. If you still are not experiencing any relief, then continue to increase your dosage as needed.
Once your symptoms are under control, you may decrease your strength back to a lower dosage that will still encourage overall balance and wellness. If you feel you aren't getting the results you want, try increasing your dose again. CBD works differently for everyone, and it's important that you find a strength that works best for you and your individual needs.
The three main types of CBD are:
What's the difference between them? Full Spectrum CBD products contain a full cannabinoid profile, meaning they contain key cannabinoids found in the hemp plant, including THC. Most Full Spectrum CBD products will contain a THC content of less than 0.3%, which is the federal limit. Full Spectrum CBD products that contain higher THC content are treated, much like marijuana usage.
Full Spectrum products are often claimed to be the most effective out of all other products because of its full cannabinoid profile. Having a full cannabinoid profile allows the entourage effect to provide better results. When all the cannabinoids are present in a CBD product (including THC), the individual effects and benefits of each cannabinoid may be enhanced and change by the presence of the other cannabinoids. This is why Full Spectrum products typically result in more or better results when compared to Broad Spectrum or isolate products.
Broad Spectrum CBD products contain a broad cannabinoid profile but do not contain all of the cannabinoids from the hemp plant. Specifically, these types of products will not contain THC. Without the presence of THC, the entourage effect may still take place, but it may not be as effective as it would be if THC were present. Broad Spectrum and Full Spectrum typically contain a high content of CBD and then lower levels of CBC, CBG, and CBN.
CBD Isolates only contain one cannabinoid, while most other types of CBD contain additional cannabinoids and natural compounds like terpenes and flavonoids retained during the extraction process. The extraction process for CBD isolates begins the same way as other types of CBD, but it must go through additional steps to ensure that the final product contains only the desired cannabinoid.
The final product should be a white, odorless, tasteless, crystalline powder. This powder can then be added to food, oils, and beverages. Isolates are generally considered the most versatile CBD product. Although, it is also considered less effective than other types of CBD because you are only receiving the benefit of one cannabinoid.
All types of CBD can be available in several different forms. The most common form of CBD is an oil or tincture, but products are also frequently offered as gummies, capsules, creams, and powders.
Unlike Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD is not a psychoactive compound and will not result in any of the side effects associated with THC, like feelings of euphoria, appetite changes, fatigue, or dizziness. Overall, CBD is well-tolerated and should not have unusual side effects.
If any unusual side effects do occur, it can mainly be attributed to the purity and quality of the CBD product. Not all CBD products are the same, which is why it is important to ask for a third-party lab test prior to purchasing CBD. These lab tests can ensure that you are receiving the correct amount of CBD advertised and that no harmful additives, chemicals, fillers, pesticides, insecticides, or heavy metals are present.
One of the most common reasons not to take CBD is if you are taking other medications. In some cases, CBD may interact with certain medications, compete with them, and result in less or more than normal concentrations of the medication in the body. These interactions are unpredictable and usually result in increased, unpleasant side effects. Before taking CBD, please talk with your healthcare provider or a pharmacist to ensure that it will not affect the results of other medications you are taking.
Another reason to avoid CBD is if you have an illness. Underlying medical conditions like a weakened immune system or heart issues may be worsened with the consumption of CBD. Just because CBD is a natural wellness supplement does not mean that it is safe for everyone.
